Heathmont College offers a rigorous academic program for students with an emphasis on relationships with staff to achieve the best from students. We pride ourselves on obtaining the best results for every child and we value the ideals of an international education.
We are one of the few Government school with its own English Language Centre. This allows early assimilation for students into the school and introduces them to teachers who will also teach them in their mainstream classes. In this program, students will spend two terms learning English as well as engaging in a variety of orientation programs around Melbourne. Australian cultural expectations, customs and information about the local area and the school will be incorporated into the orientation program.
Students are provided with an International Student Handbook which contains valuable information about the program and how the College operates. They are provided with important documents in their own language to help them understand their responsibilities and their rights.
Once students have satisfactorily completed this program (normally of 20 weeks) they are supported in mainstream classes and also through afterschool homework clubs.
While our students are supported with English as an Additional Language studies it is their attendance in mainstream classes that benefit the College community. Many of our international students stay with local homestay families, allowing them to experience Australian culture and community whilst also enhancing their English language skills.
Our pastoral care model is based on a Learning Group program. Students have an opportunity to mix with their peers who are not in their timetabled classes and become well known by staff members.
